Y'know, when he's on, Joss Whedon is pretty damn good, the Operative and the introducing the crew/crashing sequence being cases in point. Plots and textual depth still not his strong suits but the man can build characters and write dialogue.
But I'm pretty sure he stole the "raggedy edge" line from Thunderdome and Mr. Universe is why "deus ex machina" is considered a bad thing.
