Oh, boys.

Oh, my boys.

Every year, I watch and I hope and inevitably you disappoint. But then you do this - the reigning Stanley Cup Champions. At home. In the opening game. - and I fall in love all over again.

DON CHERRY IS ON NBC - MAKE THE MADNESS STOP!!!

And of course, he's taking about how great fighting in hockey is - fuck you, buddy. And fuck the moron beside you who thinks visors are for pansies. Best hockey game I've seen in the last four years - Canada versus Sweden Gold Medal game, Turino 2006 - it was clean, beautiful, masterful hockey. None of this fighting bullshit.

Fuck you, Don. You're still a moron.

eta: oh, the moron was Brett Hull. O_o Yeah, that's a moron all right. Moron with a side of racist asshole. Lovely. Fuckin' embarassment the both of them.

This is a really good game.

eta: Great Googaly Moogaly! Detroit, you're killing me, just killing me. At the same time, the difference that experience can make in a clutch situation - the Ducks are circling about the ice like a tizzy in a tea cup and they could easily find themselves in overtime, if not losing the game after leading 3-0, because they just won't settle. Five icing calls against Anaheim in this period - says it all.

*watches*

eta2: 3-4 Anaheim with under four to go... See?

Also, Chelios should be playing football - he drew that penalty with some old school skill. I'd say it's a questionable call at this point for the ref but that's how the breaks fall.

eta3: 3-4 Anaheim - heartbreaker for the Wings, squeaker for the Ducks.

I am a dirty, two-timing, faithless, goes-both-ways whore.

There: I've said it - go Sens!

Following the Wings/Shark game by refreshing the play-by-play page on NHL.com... It's a little weird.

Actually, it's a lot weird.

End of the first period, Sharks up 1 - 0 with 43 seconds remaining.

Update: 19:55 in the second period, Wings get one back and it's 2-1 Sharks.

Update 2: OVERTIME?! You're killing me, just killing me, guys.

Update 3 (1:24 a.m.) Wings take it 3-2 in overtime. I am torn! Torn I tell you (but also kind of pleased 'cause I didn't think they'd pull it out).

I sat down to the hockey tonight...

and I rooted for the Sens.

eta: Don Cherry just said "Hear that kids, good manners are everything."

Don!

Tonight, irony wears red velour! Double-breasted red velour!

Two articles from CBC.CA that prove once again that no one takes hockey quite as seriously as Canadians:

  • Hockey Canada officials called before parliamentary committee to explain choice of Team Canada captain

  • Lord Stanley's Cup visits Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan (along with 15 ex-NHLers).

  • Apparently, the pros plan to play some ball hockey with the guys while they're there. Maybe they'll roll up the rim at the Khandahar Timmie's, too.

eta: sign of the times - the searchable photo index on the DND website has added a fallen soldier tag to their drop-down menu.

Vancouver or Anaheim? Buffalo, obviously, but San Jose? And really, is it time to let bygones be bygones and root for the Sens?

Oh, thank you God: CBC is streaming the game.

Calgary - you're playing stupid, stop it. And what the hell was that with the goalie?

Detroit - well played, damn you. Well played.

Why are you showing a clip from Slap Shot?!

    *howls*

How can you comment on a hockey game when you know nothing about the sport, you stupid fuckwit! And who is the stupid man standing between the two boxes?

Repeat after me: hockey is a sport. Hockey does not equal wrestling. I will not broadcast a hockey game like I'm giving colour commentary on an episode of Dynasty.

OMG, did that add just mention a 'decrease in semen,' OMG, I *hate* American sports broadcasting. You suck so much and so do your adds.

American hockey coverage actually hurts me. Not quite as much as the score (3-0 Detroit - hello, were you listening to me Hockey Gods? Huh, I thought not) but still. Gah.

    Ron Maclean, I miss you.

eta: OMGWTF, I just saw a recruiting ad for the Marines that featured a little arabic child giving a flower to a US marine in full battle-rattle. I thought it had to be a joke until I turned the volume on. The "no, they like us, they really like us" moment was followed by scenes that went on to link Iraq (and I suppose, Afghanistan) with World War II and all that 'Greatest Generation' claptrap.

I think it was one of the most calculated and cynical things I've ever seen.

You have no idea how unpleasant it will be for me if the Sens make the playoffs. Not to mention that we already have two teams from south of the snow line in the conference semis and you're making me choose between a third and rooting for Vancouver. That's is just cruel, guys. At least the Sabres squeaked through, even if the hockey was less than brilliant. Now, about the Calgary/Detroit series... You know how I love Jarome Iginla - enought to root for Calgary - but I love the Wings, too. We've been together 10 years and while nothing will ever been quite the same as those awesome Cup years of the 90s, I thought we had a real future together. But you took on Bertuzzi, guys, Bertuzzi.

And, y'know, I still love you, Detroit. I'm still hoping we can get together at the Joe Louis and have a few beers sometime in the future but not while you're with him - it's a line I just won't cross. So, please, Hockey Gods, if you could - Calgary over Detroit tonight, please?

This is the kind of hockey I grew up with every Saturday night on the CBC.

I'm not sure how good the hockey was but the games were never boring...
